What’s the Difference Between AI Assistants, Automation, and AI Agents?
Before we jump into tools and tactics, it’s important to understand the core concepts:
- AI Assistants are tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or DALL·E that help generate text, images, videos, or audio. They’re great at producing content but don’t do much beyond that.

Start Small: Automate Repetitive Tasks with No-Code Tools
If you’ve never automated anything before, start with no-code platforms like Make.com (formerly Integromat).
Here’s a simple example:

Instead of manually logging customer emails:
- Connect your email and Google Sheets in Make.com.
- Set a scenario to pull in new emails and record:
- Date
- Sender’s email
- Subject line
- Message body
- Schedule it to run every 6 hours, or whenever you need.
Result? Your support tickets log themselves. No more copy-paste headaches.
Adding AI to Your Automation Workflows
Once you’re comfortable with basic automation, you can enhance your workflows by integrating AI tools. This is where things get more powerful and useful for content creation, communication, and operations.
Automatically Creating LinkedIn Posts from News Articles
Here’s a real-world example:
- Use Google Sheets to gather article links.
- Scrape the article content using a tool like Scraptio.
- Pass the content to a text generation model (like GPT-4) via an API.
- Automatically generate a LinkedIn post draft.
- Review and post manually to avoid violating LinkedIn’s policies.
You can schedule this process to run daily and keep your content pipeline consistent with minimal effort.
Using APIs to Power Your AI Automations
To connect AI tools with automation platforms, you’ll often need to use an API key. Here’s a high-level overview of how this process works:
- Generate an API key from a platform like OpenAI.
- Define how the AI should respond, including instructions, context, and desired outcomes.
- Plug this configuration into your automation platform (e.g., Make.com or Whisper Flow).
- The AI will now process inputs and generate outputs automatically within your workflow.
This allows for fully custom content and communication workflows that are context-aware and repeatable.
What Makes AI Agents Different?
AI agents are more than just workflows or bots. They’re capable of handling conversations, making decisions, and taking actions on your behalf. One example from the masterclass involved a Telegram-based personal assistant that could:
- Schedule meetings
- Send emails
- Pull data and updates
- Execute user requests using natural language
Unlike basic automation, this agent understands user prompts, decides what actions to take, and executes them across multiple platforms.
