Key Challenges for Web3 Founders — Part 1
A three part blog series on what keeps web3 founders on their toes for attaining success. In this part, we cover the challenges faced while ideating a solution, building an MVP, devising the product-market fit & building the right team.
Building a venture is not easy — that is a known fact. It takes a considerable amount of effort on the the part of the founders to cover the distance which turns out like running a marathon on a steeplechase course. No straight even stretch — full of obstacles and challenges. It is no different in the Web 3.0 space too. The challenges in the web3 space are probably greater and accentuates further owing to the fact that this industry in itself — is still a work-in-progress.
Having said that, embarking on a web3 venture does present myriad of challenges, but with strategic approaches, these hurdles can be transformed into opportunities for success. Let’s dive into some of these core challenges that web3 founders often encounter and try and figure out a way out with actionable advice.
This is part-1 of a three-part series.
Shaping a Vision — The ‘Idea’ quagmire
A founder mindset loves ideating on possible perceived problems. The issue is not having an idea or even a bunch of them. The challenge is to have an idea that not only solves an underlying problem, but has the potential to be converted into a sound business model with a revenue generating structure put in place. Building a business model in as dynamic an ecosystem as Web 3.0 puts the founder at a high risk of failure or becoming a non-starter if not building upon the ‘idea’.
Some challenge points:
- embracing the decentralized ethos while envisioning solutions is crucial but challenging.
- distinguishing between hype-driven trends and genuine pain points in the Web3 space — which requires deep market understanding.
- striking the right balance between revolutionary ideas and practical implementation.

Building an MVP — Foundations Amid Complexity
Once you cross the ideation hurdle, comes the point where you have to decide the shape of the product or service you want built around that idea. What you end up building at this stage, will lay the foundations of your business roadmap and envisioned success.
MVP, is a product with enough features to attract early-adopter customers and validate a product idea early in the product development cycle. It follows the proof of concept and prototype phases of the product.
Most common challenges a founder has to contend with at this stage:
- designing a user journey and experience of a yet to be proven problem statement,
- choosing the right tech-stack & project management methodology from within the plethora of options available in #web3,
- implement security measures without compromising scalability and decentralization,
- failing to identify the user personas and the real needs of the target audience,
- entrusting somebody with a task they are not qualified enough for,
- fixation towards perfection — aiming to be perfect at this stage is not required.

Finding a Product Market Fit
Most Investors demand evidence of product-market fit before they invest in a company. Hence having a PMF becomes essential to drive capital into your business and eventual growth as it proves that your idea has a real-world evidence of customer traction.
However, the product is not just about the money that it could bring, it is also about continuous validation of your idea and the growing needs of the customer and markets.
Common Challenges at this stage:
- defining a clear and compelling value proposition that enables user acquisition, retention and growth,
- identifying a target market that can help focus efforts, optimize resources, and increase the conversion rates,
- building a scalable, adaptable, resilient and profitable product for lasting impact, market domination and for staying ahead of the curve

Team building for a decentralized idea
Decentralization attracts a decentralized team. This means having people work across across geographies and time zones that can take a toll in the working of a startup. Building a cohesive, skilled & mostly remote team will always be a challenge. Building a business in Web 3.0 is anyway very demanding, team management adds to this demand.
Some significant challenges:
- finding & attracting individuals with the appropriate talent and expertise required and at a price that one can afford,
- building a strong remote work culture and ensuring effective communication channels are essential for success,
- dependence on fund availability for offering competitive compensation packages and providing opportunities for professional growth.
- aligning a vastly remote team to the company’s culture, ethos and goals,
Part 1 Conclusion
